An interesting year in the WCSSAA league continued to evolve on Thursday as the Huron Heights Huskies upset the Cameron Heights Golden Gaels 65-57 at CHCI yesterday evening.
Granted, the Gaels are not the same squad that won WCSSAA last season, but they are still a powerful bunch that had captured the Southwood Roundball Classic in Cambridge last weekend.
The loss drops Cameron to 2-3 on the season, which might have some of the top few teams a little bit nervous, as I'm sure none of them would want to have to face CHCI in a quarterfinal game.
Sean Samuel poured in 25 points in yesterday's win, with fellow guard Darcy Jacobs adding 12. Vedran Dmitrovic had 18 and Jason Thompson 13 for the Gaels.
Other results on Thursday:
Preston 64, WODSS 53
My Pick: WODSS
Another big win for the Preston Panthers - who now have wins over WODSS and CHCI to their credit. Wes Meertens had 19 and Dan Parreira 12 for the Panthers; Chris Thompson (10), Patrick Conners (9) and Kyle Weber (9) led the Crusaders.
Forest Heights 62, KCI 38
My Pick: FHCI
Despite losing Javon Masters early in this one to an eye injury, the Trojans rolled past KCI at home. Juwan Miller picked up the slack in Masters' absence, putting home 28 points, while Paul Anderson added 9. Jeremy Settle had 9 for KCI with Rollin Duncan adding 7.
Eastwood 56, Glenview Park 44
My Pick: GPSS
ECI picked up their first win on the season on the road in Cambridge. Jerelle Vaughan had 18 and Patric Pintea 14 for ECI; GPSS was led by a game-high 19 from Chris Thompson and 9 more by Sean Dutton.
Grand River 76, Southwood 31
My Pick: GRCI
The Rens rolled past Southwood at home, as Chuder Teny (18), Filip Cvrkalj (14) and Brandon Busuttil (14 - including a nice dunk) all had double-digit efforts. Zack Sauer netted 20 of Southwood's 31 points.
SJAM 77, Elmira 25
My Pick: SJAM
The Landers empathically defeated Elmira for their first win on the season. Nathaniel Ellis poured in 20 while Quinn Turner added 12 for SJAM; Walker Stuart and Lucas Nosal had 6 each for the Lancers.
WCI 47, Galt 29
My Pick: WCI
Thought this might be a bit closer, but WCI's superior defensive effort was the difference in this one. Dani Elgadi (19) and Zach Totzke (9) topped the WCI scoresheet, while Jack Simmons had 11 and Owais Khairi 6 for the Ghosts.
