Guelph Mercury: D10 All-Stars Blast Waterloo

Article By:  Rob Massey

GUELPH — The District 10 basketball girls ruled the Mitchell Athletics Centre court Wednesday night in the annual all-star doubleheader against their District 8 counterparts from Waterloo Region.

D10 swept the twinbill, winning the senior nightcap 69-38 after running away with the junior opener 55-12.
In both cases, it was defence in the usually offense-driven game that pushed the hosts into early leads that they wouldn’t relinquish.

The D10 seniors held D8 to three points in the first quarter on their way to a 15-point lead at halftime.

The D10 juniors were stingier, shutting out the visitors in the opening eight minutes and leading by 19 at the half.

While the games featured the best in each district, it also gave the players a chance to have a pressure-less competitive game. Smiles were common on all four squads.

“That was pretty fun,” said Rebecca Keil of the Bishop Macdonell Celtics. She was District 10’s player of the game. “Getting used to playing with everyone was fun.”

For most of the seniors, the all-star game was their final high school match. Some will go on to play university or college basketball while others will pursue other sports—Jade McGarr of the St. James Lions will concentrate on softball. A few will be back for another year of high school play.

Keil, who netted 11 points, hasn’t decided what her basketball future will bring. A Grade 12 student at Bishop Macdonell, she hasn’t ruled out returning for a fifth year of high school.

“It’s a possibility,” she said. “I’m not sure yet. It’s an option.”

This season was a mixed one for the Celtics. They finished second in league play, but were bounced out of the playoffs in the semifinals. They recovered to do the usual in winning the CWOSSA AA title, but came up flat at the OFSAA provincial tournament.

“We had some up and downs, but overall it was fun,” Keil said.

Last week was one of the downs as Bishop Mac didn’t advance out of pool play after getting a lone win in three games in their seventh consecutive appearance at the OFSAA AA championship tournament.

“We kind of had a lapse as a team,” Keil said. “It was just bad timing as a time to go downhill.”

As to be expected, the scoring in the all-star games was spread around. When the coaches made substitutions, it was always five in and five out.

Brenann Francis of the Centre Wellington Falcons led the D10 seniors with 12 points while Hannah Pearsall of the Lourdes Crusaders had nine, Julia Robertson of the Ross Royals eight, Jaime Janssen of Centre Wellington seven, Sydney Resch of Ross five, two-time league MVP Erica McFadden of Centre Wellington and Andrea Priamo of Bishop Mac four each and St. James teammates McGarr and Erica Zen and Claire Fenton of the Orangeville Bears three each. Other members of the team were Odessa Grant-Esco of the Centennial Spartans, Hanna Chidwick of the Guelph CVI Green Gaels and Bishop Mac’s Tesha Kraszkiewicz.

Kaitlyn Schenk of St. Mary’s led D8 with 11 points while schoolmate Natasha Stoyakovich, D8’s player of the game, had eight.

Erin Gerstenkorn of Lourdes and Nastassja Herriot of St. James led the D10 juniors with eight points apiece while Hannah Newman of Centennial had seven and league MVP Monica Trimble of Lourdes and team player of the game Chloe Trapp of Centre Wellington had six apiece. Chelsey Gazzola of St. James, Mackenzie Bernhardt of Bishop Mac and Teddi Taran of Ross had four each and Charlotte Case of Lourdes, Jessica Morris of Bishop Mac, Sydney Wilson of GCVI and Sam French of Orangeville had two each. Other members of the team were Camilla Diamante of St. James and Madison Fennell of Centre Wellington.

D8 player of the game was Sarah Schulz of Resurrection who had six points.
