The Grand River Renegades and Jacob Hespeler Hawks, two teams that I have in my top 5 teams entering the 2011-12 season, didn't disappoint those who went to check things out in Hespeler on Thursday night.
In Vegas lexicon, I hope you had the "over".
The squads combined for 165 points in an 89-76 Grand River victory, while four players put up 20+ performances --- Chuder Teny led the way with 26 for the Rens, while teammate Filip Cvrkalj added 25. Jason Quiring netted 22 and Javon Bryce 20 for the Hawks.
We'll surely be hearing more from both these clubs as the season progresses.
As for the other games on Thursday, the results went as follows:
Cameron Heights 77, KCI 53
My Pick: CHCI
No trouble for the Gaels here; they were backed by a nice 36-point effort from Vedran Dmitrovic.
Preston 66, Eastwood 57
My Pick: ECI
Two of my "toss-up games" went the wrong way on Thursday, and this was one of them. Congrats to the Panthers on the win. Their strong backcourt led the way with Wes Meertens and Sean Holmes contributing 17 each. Mirza Zahic had 20 to lead all scorers for ECI, while Jerelle Vaughan added 12.
Forest Heights 76, Huron Heights 23
My Pick: FHCI
Yikes. The Huskies, still adapting to life without Sean Samuel, took a beating at the hands of the FHCI Trojans on Thursday. Javon Masters (21), Adrian Russell (11) and Juwan Miller (11) led the way for Forest in this one. Alex Deadman had 6 for Huron.
Bluevale 59, Southwood 20
My Pick: BCI
The Knights were definitely not looking ahead to the SOSI this weekend as they took care of business at Southwood. Perrin Smith (18) and Garrett Large (11) both had big days on the interior for Bluevale, while Austin Gordon and Russell Giles had 5 each for the Sabres.
Galt 60, SJAM 48
My Pick: SJAM
The Ghosts are a team on the upswing this season, and they pull of a win that I wouldn't even consider an upset (I had picked SJAM by 4 in this one). Jack Simmons had 21 and Owais Khairi added 16 in the win for Galt, while Ben Reyhani scored 28 with Sayyad Bacchus adding 10 for the 'Landers.
WCI 56, Elmira 13
My Pick: WCI
Not much to say here, but the Lancers received a rude "welcome back" to the league from the Vikes. Dani Elgadi paced all scorers with 18 for WCI, while Jacob Ranton added 10. Emeka Agada had 4 to lead the Lancers.
