With four teams ranked in the top 12 of my recent CWOSSA rankings, the D8 junior circuit is shaping up to be a pretty impressive battle.
The St. David Celtics picked up where they left off over the weekend at the SJAM "CWOSSA Hoopla" Junior Tournament, picking up a victory over St. Benedict (50-41) in a battle between two "top 10" CWOSSA teams.
St. David's Brent Lasovich, averaging 18.0 PPG in league play, hit for exactly that amount in the win, while Devante Hudson and Daniel Douse netted 12 points each for the Saints.
Meanwhile, Kitchener St. Mary's survived a scare from rival Resurrection, holding off the Phoenix in a 46-40 win.
Rez led 23-20 at half but a strong fourth quarter from SMHS propelled them to the victory.
Jason Jaros did some nice work on the offensive glass and led St. Mary's with 12, while Vincent Duong had 11. Jaxon Matcheski had 15 to lead Rez and all scorers, while Demar Holness and Jamu Iluya had 14 each.
PRDG, meanwhile, picked up their first win in their return to D8 junior basketball with a 47-42 win over Woodland. Pat Martini poured in 27 for the Chevaliers, while Ryan Vanleewan had 12 for the Cavs.
Another "A" school, Rockway, was also victorious last night, 41-29 over Monsignor Doyle. Matt Kipfer (23) and Tim Falco (13) provided the majority of the Flames' offense, while Bryan Avila had 9 to pace the 'Stangs.
