D8 Wednesday: Senior Mustangs Push Saints

The Monsignor Doyle Mustangs nearly turned the D8 Basketball League on its head on Wednesday afternoon.

The 'Stangs, playing their Cambridge rivals (and CWOSSA top-10 ranked) St. Benedict, trailed 24-21 at half and by 10 points after three, only to mount a charge in the fourth quarter to trail by 3 (49-46) with 2:00 to go.

However, the 'Stangs would go cold after that with free throws accounting for the final margin.

Justin Malnerich (19) and Zubair Seyed (14) led the way for SBCSS, while three 'Stangs were in double-figures:  Jordan Deveney-Reid (16), Ryan Stafford (14) and Sohrob Sultani (12).

Had the 'Stangs been able to hold on, it's quite likely that the Resurrection Phoenix would have been the team demoted to the "B" division, once tiebreakers are sorted out.  Of course, there's still another game left for some teams (January 5th) before that occurs.

Both other senior games on Wednesday went as expected.

Resurrection rolled over Rockway, 82-36, backed by 16 points by Michael Perak.  Jesse Reusser had 12 for the Flames.

St. David, meanwhile, topped Woodland 52-43.  Austin Berry had 12 to lead St. David, while Shane Clarke netted a game-high 18 for the Cavs.

Three games were also on the junior slate on Wednesday.

Resurrection was down a couple starters for their tilt against Rockway, but still won as expected, 54-35.  Pawel Nowak (14) and Jamu Iluya (12) led the way for Rez, while Matt Kipfer had 10 for the Flames.

St. David, meanwhile, had no trouble with Woodland in a 44-15 win.  Brent Lasovich and Matthew Raddochia had 8 each for the Celts; Woodland's leading scorer, also with 8, was Josh Olubobokun.
