The Eastwood Rebels were victorious in their home tournament this past weekend, extracting some slight revenge over the St. Mary's Eagles after the Eagles had dropped them in the same tournament final last year.
That said, getting to the final and winning it was not easy. The Rebs were without their star forward, Michelle Hudyn, for their opening contest and needed overtime to take out Dundas Parkside 41-36.
With Hudyn back in the lineup, things were a bit easier on Saturday morning against Cambridge Southwood as the Rebels rolled to a 34-16 win. Hudyn outscored the Sabres with a 17-point performance in that one.
The final was every bit as competitive as many had anticipated (I had ranked the Eagles #5 and Eastwood #7 in my initial CWOSSA preseason rankings on Friday). In fact, it took OT to decide the contest and the Rebels came away with a 53-51 victory backed by 25 more from Hudyn. The Eagles' Kaitlyn Schenck, who averaged 24.3 PPG for the tournament, did everything she could to help her team by pouring in 33 points in the final.
Look for these clubs to make a push for CWOSSA spots this season. Eastwood's regular season starts tomorrow against Preston (5:00pm, ECI) while the Eagles tip-off today against Resurrection (5:00pm).
In other games, Ancaster took the consolation title 41-30 over St. Benedict (Cambridge) while Cameron Heights dumped Southwood 42-20 for 3rd place. Despite losing the bulk of their scoring offense from last year's team (Erin Robbins, Siki Jez), it appears that the Gaels will still be fairly competitive this year ---- they took St. Mary's to the wire in a 36-34 semifinal loss.
