The St. Mary's senior Eagles are the early-season favourites in the D8 senior boys' basketball league, but it looks as though the junior Eagles may be equally strong as well.
The juniors moved to 2-0 with a 66-41 win over the St. David Celtics, who are a much improved team this year with a number of quality grade nine players. Jermain Lyle and Nathan Riley had 16 points each in the win, while St. David was led by James McBride (12) and George Dumitru (11).
The senior Eagles were playing their first league game on Wednesday and cruised to a 70-35 doubling of St. David. Zak Hannah, who has battled a throat infection early in the season, came back to notch a 17 point effort while grade 10 guard/forward Telloy Simon had 11 more for St. Mary's. Jake Winter had 10 and Matt Scanlon 9 for the Celtics.
Meanwhile, the Monsignor Doyle Mustangs posted double-digit wins in their returns to both senior (they were an "exhibition" schedule last year with many grade 9 and 10 players) and junior (didn't field a team last year).
In senior, Uzair Khan poured in 27 and Manveer Singh added 18 as the 'Stangs doused the Rockway Flames 65-43. Will Russell had 11 and Dan Musselman 10 for Rockway.
Over in junior, Doyle picked up a 50-34 win, backed by 17 from Ryan Stafford and 12 more from Liam Rivard. Simon Pudwell and Liam Robinson had 6 each for Rockway.
The other junior game on Wednesday evening saw the St. Benedict Saints handle the Woodland Cavaliers by a 42-27 final. Scoring details were unavailable.
