The St. John's Green Eagles fought off a gutsy performance by the Brantford Collegiate Institute Mustangs on Thursday to win the Brant County senior girls' basketball championship.
The Eagles won 57-33.
It was an even game in the first half with BCI leading 22-20 at the break.
“I'm very proud of the girls,” said Matt Lynch, coach of the senior Eagles. “It is a testament to their team (BCI) how well they came out with a lot of fight and gave us all we could handle.
“But we had a desire to win in the second half. There were some unselfish plays. It was great team basketball.
The senior Eagles were undefeated this season and now move on to CWOSSA.
“The girls' effort was outstanding,” said BCI coach Ron Jamula. “They should be very proud of their effort.”
Top scorers for the Eagles were Megan Thompson and Brianna Bavota.
Top scorers for BCI were Summer Sakulak and Lexi Lancaster.
Also undefeated this season, the junior Eagles beat the Assumption College Lions 51-36 to take the junior title.
St. John's ended the first quarter 17-9 and never gave up its lead. By the end of the second, they were ahead 24-11 after Assumption had trouble making its foul shots.
The junior Eagles came out strong and took control, with a 41-20 lead at the end of the third.
“There were a few things we could have done better, like turnovers and our fouls,” said coach Alexa Santilli. “But overall I'm proud and happy for the girls. I'm proud of what we've accomplished and I'm hopeful for what we can accomplish at CWOSSA."
High scorers for the Eagles were Alex Girardi, Emily Dignan, Lauren DeMontemorency, and Kayla Gaucher.
High scorers for Assumption were Tatum Osborne, Sophia Pace, Jordyn Beda and Kianna Francis.
