The Record: First Senior Title in Crusaders' Sights

Article By:  Mark Bryson

KITCHENER — A first-time champion will be crowned in the Waterloo County senior girls basketball league.

The Waterloo-Oxford Crusaders will face the Jacob Hespeler Hawks in Wednesday's final at Preston High School as both teams won semifinal contests on Saturday night at Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute. The Crusaders scored a 47-35 win over the three-time defending champion Waterloo Vikings and the Hawks recorded a 47-38 win over the Cameron Heights Golden Gaels.

The Crusaders are now 13-0 on the season, a record that includes a 41-32 win over Jacob Hespeler on Oct. 10. The Hawks are 11-2 and will be clear underdogs on Wednesday, a fact that means nothing to Waterloo-Oxford's Alisha Glendinning.

"You have to block out what's happened in the past and go into this knowing you're playing a good team and to give it everything you've got," said Glendinning.

Teammate Tess Pettigrew concurs.

"We can't be overconfident because then you won't play your best," she said.

Pettigrew and Glendinning led the Crusaders on Saturday night with 16 and 12 points respectively and Maddy Horst added 10.

Kaylee Anagnostopoulos had 16 and Danielle Sauve had 12 for the Vikings, who trailed 29-19 at the break and were unable to close that gap in the second half.

Winning the school's first-ever senior title would be a very big deal for Glendinning, who was part of W-O's junior team that recorded a perfect season two years ago and won the WCSSAA crown over WCI in the final.

"We went undefeated in Grade 10 but this would mean so much more to all of us to do it as seniors because for some, this will be the last time they play competitive basketball," she said.

The Wright twins led Jacob Hespeler against Cameron Heights as Courtney had 21 points and Candice added 18.

Nina Farkic and Shama Saleh led the Gaels with 12 and seven points respectively.

The Grand River Renegades will meet the KCI Raiders in the junior final as both teams scored semifinal wins on Saturday.

Maya Day scored 21 and Nyasha Mombeshora chipped in with 10 as the Renegades beat the Sir John A. Macdonald Highlanders, while Michaela Schlumberg had 14 points as the Raiders slipped past Jacob Hespeler 25-15.
