In a rematch of last year's WCSSAA final, the KCI Raiders and Grand River Renegades did battle yesterday evening at Preston High School in Cambridge.
This year, the Renegades made sure to flip the script.
After being heavy favourites to win the title last year and falling short in the championship game, the Renegades executed when they needed to down the stretch yesterday, extending a three-point (31-28) late third quarter lead into a 20-point margin by the game's final horn (52-32), to win going away.
G/F Tijana Abadzic had a couple of clutch baskets in the second half to help the Rens; she finished with 13 points, one back of Nancy Michael who led Grand River with 14. Nyasha Mombeshora added 11 and Maya Day was also in double-figures with 10.
The Rens are expected to be the favourites at the AAAA CWOSSA event in Guelph/Fergus this coming weekend; their lone loss on the year was to another team competing in the event, Kitchener Resurrection (a game in which Mombeshora was injured).
KCI will be among the contenders at the AAA tournament in Brantford; KCI will be seeking to knock off Brantford St. John's, who have been my #1 ranked CWOSSA team wire-to-wire.
