D8: Semifinal Wednesday

As a couple of upsets in yesterday's D10 and WCSSAA playoffs showed us, you have to expect the unexpected come playoff time in CWOSSA-area girls' basketball.

There's four more "one and done" scenarios today, as District 8 hosts its semifinal games in advance of Friday's championship final.  Those games on Friday will be hosted by the highest-remaining senior seed.

Today, on the senior side, top-seeded and undefeated Resurrection will take on upstart Woodland Christian (#5 seed) while St. Mary's (#2) hosts St. Benedict (#3).

While I expect both of the top-seeded teams to advance, it's not to say that the games might be closer than we would initially expect.  Woodland in particular is playing some very good basketball as of late and I wouldn't be surprised to see them stay within single-digits of Resurrection.  I'd expect something similar from the St. Mary's - St. Benedict game.

Over on the junior side, I look for top-seeded Resurrection to not have too much difficulty with #4 St. Mary's.  Rez took both games from the Eagles by large margins this year (40-9 & 34-10), and I don't expect much different this time around.

The St. David - St. Benedict game could be interesting, but I actually think the Saints should get their revengs on the Celtics from their late-season win --- I look for a Saint win by about 10 points there.
