Guelph Mercury: Spartans End Losing Streak in D10 Quarterfinals

Article By: Rob Massey

GUELPH — The Centennial Spartans felt the District 10 senior girls' basketball quarter-finals would be a good place to end their losing streak.

"This was a good time for it," Centennial coach Toffer Treiguts said. "We were on a four-game losing streak so this was a good time to get a win."

"We were kind of down on ourselves, but our coach really helped us pick each other up and really get pumped up for this game," Spartans co-captain Emma Cain said.

The Spartans had been cold at the end of the regular season, but opened the quarter-finals with a 42-34 victory over the Guelph CVI Green Gaels at GCVI Tuesday.

"It was two tough teams that battled," Treiguts said of the quarter-final. "We got some breaks and we got some shots to fall. That's what it came down to. Two tough teams and the last time we played, they beat us soundly. We knew that we needed to bring more effort and we brought more effort."

And that caused the game to become a very physical affair. Players ventured under the opposition's basket at their own risk.

"They're a strong team and we're a strong team and we went at it," Treiguts said. "Luckily, we got the breaks today."

"It was tough, but we kept pushing through it," Cain said. "We just kept playing our game."

The losing streak cost the Spartans a chance to host a quarter-final game as they finished fifth in the eight-team league at 6-8 while the Green Gaels were fourth at 9-5.

Centennial led the quarter-final throughout as the Spartans were up 6-4 at the end of the first quarter, 17-13 at the half and 28-24 at the end of the third quarter. The Green Gaels cut the gap to two points in the fourth quarter, but that was as close as they were to get.

Cain led the Spartans with 21 points while Hannah Newman had 13 and Emma Korol seven.
Ijeoma Staunton netted nine points for GCVI while Kashni Patel had eight, Sydney Wilson seven, Cally Strongman four and Huong Pham, Maddie Bauman and Tamara Peterson two apiece.

The Spartans will play at Bishop Mac in Thursday's semifinals.
