Mixed Results for CWOSSA Teams on Day 1 of OFSAA Championships

There were some mixed results from the opening day of the OFSAA championships, with 2 of 5 CWOSSA teams still in medal contention after the opening day of competition.

Teams eliminated from contention included Woodland (A), WCI (AAAA) and Centennial (AAAA), who all lost both of their games.

St. John's (#2 seed AAA) and Bishop Macdonell (#8 seed AA) both won their lone game yesterday and will play their second round games today.

A
In their opener, Woodland kept things close against #4 Trinity College through the opening quarters, trailing by 8 at half, and 9 after three quarters, but they couldn't close the gap in the fourth as Trinity wound up winning by a 38-22 final.

Julianna Thomson led the way with 9 points for Woodland in that one.

In their second game, Thomson had a very strong outing, pouring in 21 points, but the Cavs fell to #13 seed Monsignor Bruyere, 48-34.  I wouldn't necessarily call it an upset, given that Bruyere seems to have been "under the radar" coming into the tournament.  They had no trouble in their opener against the #7 seed (North Grenville), winning easily, 44-22.

AA
A 17-4 fourth quarter run propelled the #8 seed Bishop Mac Celtics to a 59-45 opening round win over the #14 seed from Burlington Assumption.

Rebecca Morris (17) and Jess Morris (16) were the leading Celtic scorers; they will play their second round game this morning against #9 seeded Sudbury La Salle.

AAA
It was over early for the highest-seeded CWOSSA team, the Brantford St. John's Eagles, as they jumped all over #12 Father Redmond (Etobicoke) in the first quarter to the tune of 26-0, before cruising to a 59-31 victory.

Kendra Van Leeuwen notched 26 and Megan Thompson added 12 in the victory; St. John's will take on #15 St. Basil (SSM) in today's second round.

AAAA
Both CWOSSA teams at the "AAAA" tournament went 0-2, but the youthful squads both gained some valuable experience on Thursday.

Centennial was defeated in their first round game by #5 Pickering HS 58-14, and they also dropped their second round affair to #2 Pope John Paul by a 58-25 score.

The #10 seeded WCI Vikings put forth a strong effort against #4 Campion, falling by just a 47-38 score in their opener.  They lost the evening's second round game against hometown Tecumseh St. Anne's by a 45-34 score.

Both WCI & Centennial will play in the consolation bracket today.
