Let's hope things are a little more exciting on Saturday.
The top four teams advanced through to the semifinals in the WCSSAA junior playoffs yesterday, with all wins coming by double-digit margins.
That's not to say that some games weren't in doubt; the #3 Jacob Hespeler Hawks finished the game on a 13-2 run to take care of the #6 Galt Ghosts, 44-32. Charlotte Clifford stepped up with a big game for the Hawks (12 points) while Shianne Riggan netted 10.
Emma Buck (game high 15) and Beth Fleming (9) were the leading Galt scorers.
The 4/5 game was controlled by the surging (#4) SJAM Highlanders, who pulled out a 47-30 victory over Preston. Joanna Bamberger (12) and Nicole Treciokas (11) both had double-digit performances for the 'Landers, while Olivia Naylor and Claire Gagne were the top Preston scorers with 7 and 6 points respectively.
Top-seeded Grand River rolled to a 48-28 win over #8 Cameron Heights, backed by another strong outing (20 points) from PG Maya Day. Nancy Michael added 12 more for the Rens, while Emma Atkinson topped the Gael scoresheet with 6.
The other quarterfinal saw #2 KCI handle #7 Bluevale by a 37-18 scoreline. Michaela Schlumberger (15) and Liv Mickie (6) led the way for the Raiders, who are looking to win their second consecutive WCSSAA title. Kiera Grien (8) and Megan Reid (4) were the top Knights on Tuesday.
So, Saturday's semifinals (at Cameron Heights) will be:
(1) Grand River vs. (4) SJAM - 2:30pm
(2) KCI vs. (3) Jacob Hespeler - 4:00pm
Also, the above four teams have also qualified for their respective CWOSSA championships. Grand River and SJAM will move on to the "AAAA" playdowns, while KCI and Jacob Hespeler are through on the AAA side.
