You wouldn't know it by the final score, but the St. Benedict Saints had the St. Mary's Eagles a little worried on Friday evening over at Resurrection in the D8 junior basketball final.
In fact, it was the Saints who carried the play in the early going, keeping the pace to a minimum and actually taking a 16-10 lead midway through the second quarter following back-to-back three-pointers by PG Erwin Zapanza.
It was at that time, however, that the clock struck midnight for the Cinderella Saints.
The Eagles would close the quarter on a 14-0 run, capped by a Mike Blumel lay-up in the waning seconds, and would outscore St. Benedict 26-6 in the third quarter to blow things wide open before coasting home in the fourth quarter to the 61-35 victory.
"There's a reason that St. Mary's is considered the number one ranked team in (AAAA) CWOSSA," said SBCSS Ron Martinello in his post-game remarks.
Despite the loss, it was still a successful season for St. Benedict. In fact, the finals appearance was their first since (I believe) the early part of the 2000s. I can confirm that they haven't been in a junior final since the 2003-04 season.
The Eagles received 30 points off of the bench from a pair of grade 9s ---- Mike Blumel and Telloy Simon (15 each). The duo were lights-out on this night, with Blumel going 7-for-7 from the floor and Simon knocking in 6 of his 8 attempts, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Chris Clouthier led the Eagles with 19 points, while Tyler Hergott had 6, Avery Sutton 4, Jimmy Voll 1 and Eric Duong 1.
Erwin Zapanza did all he could for the Saints, finishing with a team-high 15 points. Other Saints hitting the scoresheet included Tyler Moulton who scored 8, Jesse Sawyer (6), Matt McCarthy (4), and Haydon Polski (2).
As an interesting sidenote, there was guaranteed to be at least one happy member of the Martinello family at the conclusion of this one ---- as SBCSS' head coach, Ron Martinello's son, Sam, is a member of the St. Mary's team.
The Eagles will advance to the CWOSSA "AAAA" championship next weekend with their pool games to take place in their home gym.
As a sidenote, if anybody has a championship photo to pass my way, please e-mail it to me and I can put it up wtih this article. Thanks!
