WCSSAA QR: #6 Raiders Outlast Huskies at Home, Secure CWOSSA Berth

It was definitely a different game than the last time the Huron Heights Huskies and KCI Raiders matched up in Senior Boys action earlier this year.

In that game, both clubs had at least 63 points on the scoreboard in a 67-63 KCI win.  This time around, defense was the story as it took well over three quarters for these clubs to pick up 63 points combined.

Regardless, the #6 KCI Raiders proved that they could win ugly by pulling out a 43-36 decision over the #11 Huron Heights Huskies this afternoon at KCI.

The game started very slowly, with the Huskies actually picking up the first four points of the game (in the opening 4:00) to lead 4-0 midway through the first.  The Raiders would rebound to take a 13-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter would see more cold shooting between the two clubs, who combined to shoot at around a 25% clip (9-for-36 combined) through the opening 12 minutes.  After the Huskies had tied things at 13-13 with under 4:00 to play, the Raiders would find their touch, as Lazar Dabic (two two-pointers) and Graham Notar-Maclean (three-pointer) scored 7 points in 1:06, without any of those three shots touching the rim.

KCI would actually extend out to a 25-15 lead very late in the first half before Milad Faqiri saw his first action of the game with seconds to play in the 2nd ---- and calmly drilled a buzzer-beating three-pointer to pull HHHS within 7 heading into the locker room.

The Raiders did a solid job on Huron's high scoring guard Sean Samuel, as they limited him to just 8 points at recess.

The third quarter was closely matched, with neither team really able to assert control.  The Huskies had several big turnovers when they could have cut into the lead, including a couple unforced errors as a result of the KCI "homecourt advantage" --- the tight sidelines.

Notar-Maclean picked up his 4th foul with 2:25 to go in the frame, but it didn't hurt the Raiders as they managed to take a double-digit lead (36-25) into the final eight minutes.

In the final frame, KCI bled away about 3:00 of clock (outscoring HHHS 1-0) as neither team could get going on the offensive end.  Finally, a three-pointer by HHHS guard Darcy Jacobs broke him out of an 0-for-9 slump and cut things to single digits with 4:00 left (37-28).

Meanwhile, at the other end of the floor, KCI's key forward Alex Galea had an equally forgettable evening.  He actually started out 0-for-10 before a layup right back at the other end about :20 after Jacobs' three gave him his first field goal of the game and restored the double-digit KCI advantage.

That said, the Huskies gave it their all to make things interesting in the final two minutes.

Down 39-28, Samuel made a driving layup with about 2:00 to go to cut things down to 9.

The Raiders then promptly turned the ball over, but Huron gave it right back about :05 later when a Jacobs pass was too hot for Eric Spinache to handle in the post.

KCI then took a relatively quick three-pointer, and Samuel took it back and got fouled on the other end (converting 1-of-2, making it an 8 point game at 39-31).

Another KCI turnover and another Samuel lay-in got Huron within 6 at 39-33.  Finally, as the clock approached 1:00, they had to resort to the "foul fest" and Lazar Dabic put and end to the madness by canning two free-throws and re-extending to an 8-point KCI advantage.

Samuel wasn't quite done there, however, as he drilled another three to make it 41-36 with about :50 to play.  Unfortuantely for the Huron fans in attendance, that's as close as the Huskies would get as KCI made a couple free-throws down the stretch (albeit on less-than-stellar 2-for-6 shooting), and the ones they missed they were able to grab offensive rebounds to continue to work the clock and, eventually, take the victory by 7.

For KCI, Graham Notar-Maclean led the way with a solid double-double (16 points and 10 rebounds).  However, he should have easily registered a 20+ effort had it not been for a missed second quarter dunk and another missed dunk attempt (where he lost control of the ball going up on a breakaway) in the third quarter.  Don't think that I wasn't going to report on that (ahem!).  Thankfully for KCI, neither miss would come back to haunt them.

Lazar Dabic added 15 for the Raiders, while Martin Bauman had 6, Galea finished with 3, Devan Bogart 2 and Jack McKinnon 1.

The Huskies were led (as usual) by Samuel, who finished with 16 in this one.  Shayan Butt added 7 for Huron, while Hunter Jones (4), Darcy Jacobs (3), Milad Faqiri (3), Eric Spinache (2) and Ben Yorga (1) accounted for the Husky scoring.

KCI will now advance to play #3 SJAM in a quarterfinal matchup on Thursday.  Of equal importance is the fact that today's win (combined with other results) also assures the Raiders of participating in this year's CWOSSA "AAA" senior tournament.
