If there's one thing that the Grand River Renegades can do with the best of them, it's scoring in bunches.
They needed all of that talent (and more) against last year's defending WCSSAA and CWOSSA "AAAA" champions, the Bluevale Knights yesterday afternoon at Bluevale.
In fact, the Renegades trailed by 5 points with just over 1:00 to go in regulation time before the Brodi Verbiski show started. He drilled a three, and then after Bluevale turned the ball over right away, he made a layup to tie things up (and eventually force OT).
The extra session saw more dramatic flair. The Rens were up three before Bluevale drove the lane for an "and one" with :10 on the clock. The pressure free-throw was made, setting up a dramatic final sequence in which Osama Qahwash nailed one of his eight three-pointers on the day, fading out of bounds as the buzzer sounded to give the Rens the 68-65 victory and a spot in Saturday's semifinals.
Qahwash finished with 26 points and Verbiski 18 to lead the Rens. Stefan Cvrkalj netted 30 in his final game at Bluevale, while Grade 12 forward Perrin Smith added 11.
Grand River will take on Cameron Heights in Saturday's semifinal play. They will be seeking to put an end to an unbelievable streak --- 45 years without a WCSSAA Senior Boys Basketball title.
Bluevale's loss means that both CWOSSA champions at the "AAAA" level (Bluevale - Senior; Resurrection - Junior) will not be returning to defend their titles this season.
