Phoenix Top Eagles in D8 Senior Final

Yes, Mike Pereira.

The grade 12 forward pumped home 20 points and 10 rebounds, including the game-tying basket in the dying seconds of regulation and the go-ahead basket in overtime as the Resurrection Phoenix came from behind to defeat the St. Mary's Eagles 68-64 in overtime tonight.

Pereira's performance wasn't lost on the Rez faithful in attendance, who serenaded him to the chants of "M-V-P" as he picked up his D8 championship plaque.

Jeff Rodrigues had a huge game as well for Resurrection, putting in 15 points including 3-for-3 from behind the arc.

Ben Bankazo led the Eagles with 18, Alex Thompson had 16 and Isaac Lance 12.

In the junior half of the doubleheader, the St. Mary's Eagles fell behind 16-10 early but used a 40-6 "run" over a quarter and a half of basketball to put things away in the junior final, going on to win 61-35.  Chris Clouthier had 19 for the Eagles, while Telloy Simon and Mike Blumel scored 15 each off the bench.  Erwin Zapanza led the Saints with 15.

The RCSS seniors and SMHS juniors will now represent the D8 at next week's CWOSSA tournament, co-hosted by those schools.

More to come momentarily on both games.
