Wednesday: D8 Semifinal Previews

Senior

#1 Resurrection (11-1) vs. #4 St. Benedict (6-6)
Season Series:  RCSS 2-0 (W 57-37, W 59-36)
Mark's Pick:  Resurrection by 16

The Resurrection Phoenix are way too deep for the St. Benedict Saints.  However, it will be interesting to see how the Saints approach this one --- perhaps they will take a page out of Coach Martinello's junior book (he played a stall in last year's semifinal between the #4 junior Saints and #1 Phoenix as RCSS came back from a halftime deficit to win 24-12).

Senior Coach John Malnerich did note in a recent Cambridge Times article that the Saints have been working on some things in preparation for a matchup with the Phoenix.  It will be interesting to see not only if those "new tricks" work, but also if the Phoenix can be caught looking ahead to a possible matchup with St. Mary's on Friday.

#2 St. Mary's (11-1) vs. #3 St. David (8-4)
Season Series:  SMHS 2-0 (W 72-44, W 75-51)
Mark's Pick:  St. Mary's by 23
The St. Mary's Eagles are just too athletic for the St. David Celtics here in this one; however, I do expect the Celts to give their all in this one and possibly be able to have a very successful CWOSSA tournament.

Junior

#1 St. Mary's (8-0) vs. #4 St. David (2-6)
Season Series:  SMHS 2-0 (W 69-30, W 88-44)
Mark's Pick:  St. Mary's by 41
In a five-team league, the difference between #1 and #4 is usually quite extensive.  This matchup is no exception --- SMHS to roll through to the finals here.

#2 Resurrection (6-2) vs. #3 St. Benedict (4-4)
Season Series:  RCSS 2-0 (W 50-36, W 43-30)
Mark's Pick:  Resurrection by 8
Of the four semifinal games, this really appears to be the only one where a possible upset could occur.  The St. Benedict Saints are vastly improved this year (losing to Bluevale, for example, by 2 points in a recent tournament).  Provided Rez doesn't overlook them, the homecourt rims should help them get the "W" here, but I expect a close game.
