Luke Santi Invational (Junior): Celtics Pull Out Win Against Phoenix

The current #1 junior boys team in CWOSSA, the Bishop Macdonell Celtics, overcame some anxious moments on Saturday afternoon to clinch the championship final of the Resurrection CSS Luke Santi Memorial Tournament, defeating the host RCSS Phoenix (CWOSSA #8) by a 55-49 final.

The game was tight throughout, with the teams tied up 29-29 at halftime.  The Celts looked like they might make a run in the third quarter after they scored the first five points on a three-pointer by Ben Morris and another two by Jesse Kendall, but the Phoenix stopped the bleeding at that point and went into the final frame down by 5.

Although starting guard Tony Moi fouled out for Resurrection with 6:00 to play, the Phoenix didn't quit.  In fact, they quietly chipped into the Bishop Mac lead and an Adam Schneider jumper with 1:45 to go put Resurrection up by 1.

Rez had a chance to extend that lead after a steal, but a contested layup was missed.  The confident Celtics would then regain the lead with about 1:00 to go, when Ben Morris was fouled an made an acrobatic shot from about 12 feet out (that just cleared the rim); the converted free throw would put the Celts up by 2.  A subsequent steal and layup, and then free-throws at the end would account for the final margin.

Morris led all scorers with 16 points, while Jesse Kendall added 14 for Bishop Mac.  Adam Schneider (14), Patrick McGlynn (12) and Tony Moi (10) were the high scorers for Rez.

Interestingly enough, in a tournament that is named in honour of former RCSS junior star Luke Santi, who passed away from cancer in 2007, Bishop Macdonell is actually the school that Luke's parents, Luigi and Shelagh, attended during their high school days.

Earlier in the day, Bishop Mac advanced to the championship final by defeating Jean Vanier (Richmond Hill) 72-59.  Resurrection pounded St. Patrick's from Sarnia 47-27 in the other semifinal.

The third place game between the semifinal losers saw Jean Vanier eke out a 40-38 victory over St. Pat's.

In consolation action on Saturday, the semifinals saw John Paul II (London) defeat Guelph Lourdes 55-40 and St. Christopher (Sarnia) knock off Denis Morris (St. Catharines) 41-35.

St. Christopher defeated John Paul II in the consolation final 61-50.

The tournament all-star team was as follows (minimum one player from each of the 8 participating schools):

Jesse Kendall, Bishop Macdonell (MVP) - 6'2" G
Ben Morris, Bishop Macdonell - 6'2" G/F
Owen Brombal, Bishop Macdonell - 5'10" G
Adam Schneider, Resurrection - 5'10" PG
Jacob Gilbert, Resurrection - 6'2" F
Michael Okon, Jean Vanier - 6'0" F
Orestes Malespin, St. Patrick's - 5'10" G
Josh Elsley, St. Christopher - 5'10" G
Damion Inlakhana, John Paul II - 6'0" G
Charlie Kayitaba, Denis Morris - 6'2" F

Andrew Chapman, Our Lady of Lourdes - 6'5" C

Note:  I would also include the grade information after the player, however, we can sum things up by stating that all of the all-stars are in grade 10; program data (re: grade) was not submitted for John Paul II or Denis Morris.
