As mentioned last week, three CWOSSA teams (St. Mary's, Resurrection and St. John's) made the trek to Hamilton over the weekend for the 34th annual Kennedy Ontario Invitational: All-Ontario Catholic Touranment.
All three are ranked among my top ten "AAAA" clubs (St. Mary's #1, St. John's #2, Resurrection #8).
The first round went as follows:
St. Mary's (Hamilton) 63, Loyola (Oakville) 36
Fr. Goetz (Miss.) 59, Bishop Tonnos (Ancaster) 55
D'Youville (Brampton) 58, Brebeuf (Hamilton) 45
St. Mike's (Toronto) 70, Christ The King (Georgetown) 30
Cathedral (Hamilton) 60, Resurrection (Kitchener) 30
Holy Trinity (Oakville) 47, St. John's (Brantford) 29
St. Mary's (Kitchener) 44, Notre Dame (Welland) 36
St. Thomas More (Hamilton) 52, St. Joan of Arc (Miss.) 34
In the second round, an all-CWOSSA matchup on the consolation side of the draw featured St. John's and Resurrection. The Phoenix played a solid first half, and took a 32-26 lead into halftime. The third quarter, however, was all St. John's. Adam Peters netted several of his seven (yes, seven!) three-pointers in the game during that frame as the Eagles established a 7-point lead entering the fourth.
In the final frame, the Phoenix hung around, and in the final minute several St. John's misses on "front ends" of bonus free throw opportunities allowed Rez's Adam Schneider to attempt a last second three-pointer for the win, which went off the rim and allowed St. John's to take the game 53-51. Peters' seven three-pointers accounted for all of his 21 points, while Schneider and Jacob Gilbert had 13 each for Resurrection.
St. John's would go on to win their next game, the consolation semi-final, against Welland Notre Dame (45-30), but came up just short against Bishop Tonnos in the consolation final (39-34).
Meanwhile, St. Mary's ended up in tough against the home-court St. Thomas More Knights in the second round on the championship side of the bracket, and came up short by a 52-34 final. St. Mary's led by 5 late in the second quarter, but three consecutive three-pointers by St. Thomas More (9-0 run) gave them the lead that they would not relinquish in the second half.
The Eagles can't be too disappointed with their effort, as the Knights would go on to take the tournament championship. However, SMHS did not help their cause with a 12-for-26 showing from the free-throw line.
Here's a rundown of the second round (and later) scores:
Consolation Round 2
Bishop Tonnos 44, Loyola (Oakville) 37

Tim Dawson (St. John's) was named as a second-team all-star for the tournament.
Several Green Eagles also were among the tournament scoring leaders. Adam Peters ranked 5th overall in tournament scoring, netting 44 points (11.0 PPG). Tim Dawson was 8th with 34 points (8.5 PPG) and Cam Post had 32 (8.0 PPG). St. Mary's Chris Clouthier ranked 20th overall with 26 points, but his 13.0 PPG average ranked 8th.
