Despite missing a couple post players on the weekend, the Kitchener St. Mary's Eagles ran off four consecutive wins over the weekend at the annual SBA Shootout before dropping the championship final to Anderson CVI of Whitby, who are generally regarded as one of the top "5 to 7 teams" in the province.
The Eagles had no trouble in their pool games, which went down as follows:
SMHS 76, Crescent School 43
SMHS: Ben Bankazo 18, Adam Voll 13, Alex Thompson 13
SMHS 84, Northview Heights (Toronto) 49
SMHS: Isaac Lance 17, Alex Thompson 16, Adam Voll 14
SMHS 70, St. Theresa of Lisieux (Richmond Hill) 53
SMHS: Ben Bankazo 19, Alex Thompson 16, Adam Voll 16
In their semifinal game, the Eagles cruised past Donald A. Wilson of Whitby (who upset GTA #13 Pope John Paul of Toronto in pool play):
SMHS 83, Donald A. Wilson (Whitby) 42
SMHS: Alex Thompson 20, Adam Voll 19, Tony Huynh 12
This advanced the Eagles to the championship game, where they went up against Anderson CVI, the tournament's defending champions and, as mentioned, one of the top high school teams provincially.
The Eagles actually led this one most of the way, however, tournament MVP Dyshawn Pierre pumped home 42 points to help the Raiders escape with an 85-84 win. The Eagles received 28 from Alex Thompson, 19 from Isaac Lance, and 18 from Ben Bankazo.
Thompson and Lance were named to the tournament's all-star team.
The Eagles return to league play tonight, as they host the Rockway Flames at 5:00pm.
