Despite being shorthanded (8 players), the Bluevale Knights finished 2-2 over the weekend at the prestigious Silver Fox Tournament.
Opposing teams may want to watch out as the Knights may be gaining some confidence back after dropping three WCSSAA league games, including 2 in a row last week.
After losing their opener to #6 St. Thomas More (as detailed below), the 11th-ranked Knights picked up a 53-50 win over #18 Hamilton Westmount, in a game that was probably not quite as close as the score would indicate; the Wildcats hit a couple of threes down the stretch to make things a little tighter at the end.
This advanced Bluevale to the "Wilfrid Laurier" flight, with #3 Father Henry Carr, #12 Sarnia Northern and #13 Ottawa Hillcrest.
Bluevale had to go up against Carr (who have been ranked provincially in the top 10 all season) --- and were able to keep the Crusaders off balance the whole game by playing a stingy zone defense. The Knights led 26-19 at the break, and only relinquished the lead once in the second half (39-38). They would handle Carr's pressure well down the stretch and came away with a 46-43 win, backed by 27 points from Stefan Cvrkalj.
The Knights just didn't quite have enough in the final of the Wilfrid Laurier flight, dropping an overtime decision (61-60) to the #12 Sarnia Northern Vikings. Cvrkalj had a game-high 30 points for Bluevale, while Jon Ravenhorst led the Vikes with 18.
Bluevale has one more WCSSAA league game before the exam break, tomorrow at 5pm at home against Glenview Park.
