SBCSS Consolation Semifinal: JF Ross 82, Huron Heights 31

The Huron Heights Huskies gave the Resurrection Phoenix a scare on Friday, before going on to defeat Richmond Hill (72-56) and Sudbury Lo-Ellen Park (75-62) to advance to the consolation semifinals.

Unfortunately for the Huskies, they simply ran out of gas against a much deeper (and experienced) JF Ross Royals team on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies hung around early, and in fact used a 13-0 run to take a 21-20 lead with 4:00 left in the first half.  The Royals would close on a 14-6 run of their own to take a 34-27 lead heading into halftime.

I'm curious to know what JF Ross head coach Bill Price told his troops at halftime.

That's because the Royals came out on FIRE in the second half, opening up with an 8-0 run in the first 2:00 of the half and actually outscoring the Huskies 32-2 in the first 9:00 of the second half.

When it was all said and done, JF Ross had outscored HHHS 48-4 in the second stanza to win in blowout fashion.

The keys for JF Ross' dominance were a combination of three things:  Using their depth to their advantage; using their size edge on the 'boards (they more than tripled up Huron in rebounding, 47-14); and extreme activity on the defensive end that forced numerous turnovers (as evidenced by the fact that JF Ross finished with 76 field goal attempts to Huron's 33).

Of course, the Royals are an experienced OFSAA-calibre team while the Huskies are really just getting their feet wet at having success at the senior level.  HHHS does have a lot of the pieces in place to make a run at an AAA spot this year (and definitely have some success in the coming 1-2 years with a solid nucleus of players), but as with any growth period there will be some "growing pains" as they experienced today.

Jack Cornett (19) and Evan Karl (19) were the leading scorers for JF Ross, while Drew Padovan added 13 points off the bench.  Sean Samuel had 12 in relatively limited minutes for the Huskies, while Darcy Jacobs scored 10.

Later in the night, Samuel (first-team) and Cornett (second-team) were named as tournament all-star selections.
