Rez Takes SBCSS Tournament; St. John's Wins Purple & Gold in 3OT!

Even with both teams shorthanded this weekend, the Resurrection Phoenix (sans Andrew Mwangi) and the Forest Heights Trojans (sans Ben Nikkel) qualified for the finals at the SBCSS 32-team tournament.

In the championship final, Mike Pereira poured in 15 points as the Phoenix held off Forest Heights 52-46.  Earlier in the day, Resurrection defeated North Park and St. Basil (SSM) to reach the championship final.  Forest Heights defeated Bluevale in the semifinals, and West Ferris of North Bay in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Tyler Schneider (RCSS) was tournament MVP and led the first team all-stars who were:
Mike Pereira (RCSS)
Javon Masters (FHCI)
Stefan Cvrkalj (BCI)
Sean Samuel (HHHS) --- 44 points vs. Lo-Ellen Park on Saturday

Second Teamers Were:
Jacob Ranton (WCI)
Jack Cornett (JFR)
Cale McDonald (NPC)
Kieran McAndrew (FHCI)
Ryan Higgins (STJ)

....interestingly enough, all the all-star selections were from CWOSSA teams.  CWOSSA clubs, of course, also made up the semifinalists on both the championship and consolation sides of the draw.

Meanwhile, at Resurrection CSS, a thrilling game in the finals of the "Purple and Gold" junior tournament as St. John's took that 16-teamer by defeating Mississauga Philip Pocock in 3OT by a 66-65 final.

Interestingly enough, at the end of the first two overtime periods, there was a foul with no time on the clock and the team shooting free throws trailing by one.  In the first OT, St. John's went 1-of-2 to send the game to the second OT, where Philip Pocock made 1-of-2 with no time left to send it to a third extra session.

St. John's guard Tim Dawson, who had 22 points in the championship final, was named tournament MVP.

We'll have lots more on these including some further analysis & boxscores from some of Saturday's action in Cambridge......tomorrow.
