Guelph Mercury: Royal Run Continues

By:  Rob Massey, Mercury staff

GUELPH — The Ross Royals moved a step closer to an undefeated season Tuesday when they handed the St. James Lions a 57-50 setback at St. James.

“We came out sloppy, but it was a big win,” Ross co-captain Shamlo Saeed said. “It was a good one to come in here and win. It’s a hard place to win.”

Ross has won all 11 District 10 high school senior boys basketball league games this season. Keeping the unbeaten streak going, though, is not the goal of the Royals as they know a zero under the win column means nothing if they don’t convert it into a title in the playoffs.

“We don’t worry about that stuff,” Saeed said of staying unbeaten. “It’s just one game at a time until we get to the finals and we’ll take that that way, too.”

Ross won all six of their games in the D10 football league, only to lose in the semifinals.

The Royals also won all 14 of their games in the D10 senior boys volleyball league, but were swept in the championship match.

The basketball Royals don’t want to keep that trend going.

Tuesday, the Royals started slowly as St. James led 17-11 at the end of the first quarter. However, the teams were tied 28-28 at the half and Ross led 48-38 after three quarters.

“Our press break took a little bit of time to get going, and it was more that we weren’t set in time,” Ross coach Bill Price said. “Once we get it going, we’ve got a pretty good press break and we’re pretty confident.”

“We came out sloppy and unfocussed,” Saeed said. “Focus and defence – when we play defence, we’re pretty good so we just stepped it up after halftime and we got a nice run coming out.”

The Royals, who used a basket at the buzzer on a layup by Trey Larue to create the halftime stalemate, established a five-point lead in the first three minutes of the third quarter and never trailed again.

The teams are the top two in the league, Ross leading at 11-0 and St. James second at 9-2. Both losses for the Lions have been to the Royals.

Wil de Groot and Shamlo Saeed each had 17 points for Ross. Evan Karl added nine with eight going to Jack Cornett.

Ryan Higgins led St. James with 23 points while Justin Marleau added 10. Konrad Babol followed with eight while Alex Campagnolo had seven.

With Tuesday’s win, the Royals will finish either first or second as the Lions are the only team that can catch Ross in the standings.

There are three game days left in the regular season – one Thursday and two after a break for exams.
