Junior: Kennedy All-Ontario Catholic Tips-Off Tomorrow in Hamilton

Three CWOSSA teams will be facing some stiff competition this weekend at the annual Kennedy All-Ontario Catholic tournament in Hamilton.

Interestingly enough, all three CWOSSA teams (St. John's Green Eagles, Resurrection Phoenix and St. Mary's Eagles) are on the same side of the draw as play opens up tomorrow morning.

The Green Eagles and the Phoenix might actually meet in the second round if both teams win or lose their opening games.  Both teams are in tough, with St. John's playing Oakville Holy Trinity (one of the top junior teams in Ontario), while Resurrection battles a perennial powerhouse in the hometown Cathedral Gaels.

Things aren't any easier for the St. Mary's Eagles, who draw Notre Dame of Welland in the opening round, and will play either St. Joan of Arc (Mississauga) or the homecourt St. Thomas More Knights in the second round.

Here's how the opening games stack up:

At Bishop Tonnos
9am:  Loyola (Oakville) vs. St. Mary's (Hamilton)
10:30am:  Bishop Tonnos (Ancaster) vs. Father Goetz (Mississauga)
Noon:  Brebeuf (Hamilton) vs. D'Youville (Brampton)
1:30pm:  Christ The King (Georgetown) vs. St. Michael's (Toronto)

At St. Thomas More
9:00am:  Resurrection (Kitchener) vs. Cathedral (Hamilton)
10:30am:  St. John's (Brantford) vs. Holy Trinity (Oakville)
Noon:  Notre Dame (Welland) vs. St. Mary's (Kitchener)
1:30pm:  St. Joan of Arc (Mississauga) vs. St. Thomas More (Hamilton)

The last CWOSSA champion of this tournament was back in 2001, when Assumption College of Brantford defeated St. Mary's (Hamilton) 49-42 in the championship game.  Kitchener Resurrection won the consolation title that year, by taking out Hamilton Brebeuf 67-62.

In recent tournaments, CWOSSA's most successful year overall was probably 2008, when D8 schools Resurrection and St. Mary's both advanced to the championship side final four.  Resurrection lost to Brampton D'Youville in a semifinal, while D'Youville topped St. Mary's in the final (after SMHS defeated Oakville Holy Trinity).
