Brantford Expositor: Senior Trojans Step up With Captain Injured

Article By:  Vincent Ball

The North Park Trojans senior girls basketball team used good ball movement and a strong inside-outside game to beat the Assumption College Lions on Thursday.

Playing without Holly Ryerse, their captain who was out with an injury, the Trojans got superb efforts from a lot of players to roll to a 65-35 victory in Brant County high school action.

"I was a little worried going into the game because we were missing Holly," North Park coach Andrea Hawkins said after the game. "But a lot of the girls really stepped up tonight and that was good to see.

"I think we also handled the (full-court) pressure better than we have in other games."

Reo Roland scored 13 points for the Trojans while Jessica Grant scored 12 and Cassie Fletcher added 11.

Fletcher used her size to score some inside layups while others such as Laura Chapple and Allyson DeLorenzi scored a couple of three-pointers.

For a young Assumption team, the game was another step on a learning curve that is only six games old.

The Lions don't have a lot of height and must rely on speed, tenacious defence and a fastbreak offence with some three-pointers. They hustled all over the court and put a lot of pressure on the Trojans. But they couldn't hit many three-pointers or generate any other offence.

"I like the way we pressured them," Lions coach Rick Heron said. "We've only just started doing that and I think they've got it.

"But, for us to be successful, we have to have a good fastbreak offence and I don't think the girls really trust it yet. It's new for them, something they have to learn."

Jericka Baldin scored nine points for the Lions.

In the junior contest, Assumption beat North Park 47-33, with Sara Harris leading the Lions in scoring with 10 points followed by Alexandra VanDyk with eight.

In other girls basketball action Thursday, the St. John's College Green Eagles won both games against Pauline Johnson Collegiate.

The seniors won 69-22. Charlotte Clark scored 15 for the Eagles, followed by Emma Dudley with 11. Colleen Thibert, Sam Buck and Zoe Wickson each scored five for PJ.

In the junior contest, Jessika Dignan scored 10 points and Megan Thompson got eight as the Green Eagles won 48-21. Natasha Irwin hit for six points for PJ and Mackenzie Pulham got five.

Meanwhile the Brantford Collegiate Institute Mustangs beat the Paris Panthers in the senior girls game, with Claudia DiFrancesco scoring 12 for the winners and Spencer Candy scoring 10. Emma Parry had seven for the Panthers and Deven Knill had four.

In the junior game, BCI won 56-14 on the strength of good performances by Natalie York and Jenna Schonbacher.
