Several CWOSSA alums were able to help the University of Guelph Gryphons defeat Lake Erie College of Ohio, an NCAA Division II school, by an 87-74 final on Friday night in Guelph.
In fact, three former CWOSSA players were in Guelph's starting lineup --- Kevin Cameron (Centre Wellington), Danny McCarthy (Guelph Centennial) and Michael Petrella (Brantford Assumption).
Drew Morris (Bishop Mac) and Andrew Beney (Waterloo Bluevale) saw action off the bench.
In a back-and-forth first half, the Gryphons were able to manage a 9-point halftime advantage ---- every time that they were able to extend into double digits it seemed as though Lake Erie had the answer.
The third-quarter, however, was the decisive frame. Guelph put up 32 (yes, 32!) points in the ten minute frame, only to see Lake Erie manage 25 of their own. Still, that enabled Guelph to extend to a 16 point lead heading into the last quarter of play (Morris actually had a 4-point play late in the 3rd quarter that really seemed to take the wind out of the Storm.....no pun intended).
Garick Sims was the top performer for Lake Erie, with 17 points including a nice two-handed jam in transition during the first half. Toronto's Jon Moscatelli led Guelph and all scorers with 28 points, including a slick 8-for-11 showing from three-point land.
The full boxscore can be accessed at Lake Erie College's web site, however, here's a quick rundown on the CWOSSA talent in attendance:
