In a battle between two ranked clubs in my weekly "AAA" ranking, the St. David Celtics survived a scare at home by the Monsignor Doyle Mustangs, topping them by a 52-49 final in a relatively high scoring game.
After also narrowly falling to probable "AAA" CWOSSA qualifier Galt on Tuesday by the same margin, it appears that MDCSS is gathering some steam heading into the second half of the season. Although they sit at 2-3 in D8 play, it will be interesting to keep an eye on them going forward.
On this particular night, Sam Edwards had a 20-point effort for Doyle, while Amelia Walsh added in 12. The Celts were led by Tabitha Siegfried (12) and Kaitlin Garbutt (10).
In other games:
Resurrection 55, Rockway 24
My Pick: RCSS
Janelle Santi and Megan Robinson scored 14 each to pace the Phoenix to an easy win on the road at Rockway. Alex Hood was a one-woman show for Rockway, pouring in 22 of the Flames' 24 points.
St. Mary's 58, St. Benedict 29
My Pick: SMHS
The Eagles continue their firm hold on first place by taking care of the Saints. Laura Boterman and Kaitlyn Schenck had 14 each for St. Mary's, with Erika Ancion adding in 8. Meagan Mason had 16 to led the Saints, while their top gun Andrea Zapanza was unable to get rolling in this one and finished with 5.
Senior Girls D8 Standings
1. St. Mary's 5-0
2. St. David 4-1
3. Resurrection 3-2
4. Monsingor Doyle 2-3
-----
5. St. Benedict 1-4
6. Rockway 0-5
Junior Girls
St. David 41, Monsignor Doyle 35
The Celtics get an important victory over Doyle in a battle between the two "AAA" schools in D8 (only the top one qualifies for CWOSSA). Both are now tied up in the standings with 2-3 records. Paige Howard (12) and Shannon Pringle (12) had solid outings for the Celts, while MDCSS was led by Jade Loehle with 10 and Taylor Fitzpatrick with 8.
Resurrection 48, Rockway 12
No trouble for the Phoenix in this one. Sarah Schultz joins the 15+ club by scoring 15 on the button for Rez; teammate Marley Neiscier had 6. Emma Kschesinski led the Flames with 6.
St. Benedict 45, St. Mary's 33
Though the Eagles are improving, it was still not enough on this night against the talented SBCSS Saints, and, in particular, Hilary Ferguson who poured in 21 points. Jenelle Case added 8, while for SMHS, Linda Huynh had 8 and Laura Kay and Emma Jada had 6 each.
Junior Girls Standings
1. St. Benedict 5-0
2. Resurrection 4-1
T3. St. Mary's 2-3
T3. St. David 2-3
T3. Monsignor Doyle 2-3
6. Rockway 0-5
