Brantford Expositor: Trojans Starting to Play Like Team: Coach

It's difficult to judge the strength of a team for its classification when it's saddled with playing one of the best teams in Ontario in a higher division.

North Park Collegiate Trojans lost 43-19 to the St. John's College Green Eagles on Thursday night in a Brant County high school senior girls' basketball game at St. John's.

However, the Trojans shouldn't feel embarrassed by the loss.

The Eagles are one of the best senior girls teams in the Quad-A division.

North Park will compete at the AAA level once the Brant County championships are decided.

When the Trojans compete against other AAA schools, they're dangerous as they demonstrated last weekend when they captured a tournament championship in London.

In that tournament, they defeated London's Catholic Central High in a semifinal game before going on to beat Brantford Collegiate Institute Mustangs in the championship game.

"Catholic Central is one of the top teams in London and we beat them by 20 (points)," noted Trojans' head coach Andrea (Gump) Hawkins.

"We handled their press, finished well and we were making good decisions on offence but, most importantly, we're starting to play like a team.

"We played BCI in the finals and when you looked at the scoresheet my highest scorer had 10 points. Everybody contributed, everybody chipped in."

The Trojans played the tournament without point guard Holly Ryerse, who is sidelined with a sprained ankle.

The Trojans basically went with one Grade 12 student, Jenny Howell, and six Grade 11s -Cassie Fletcher, Reo Roland, Laura Chapple, Allyson DeLorenzi, Hayley Welsh and Jessica Grant.

"My goal (this season) is to win CWOSSA (AAA) and get to OFSAA with these kids," Hawkins said. "I just want to get there (OFSAA) and have them experience it. Then next year, try to have some success there."

The Eagles showed the Trojans a different level of play that North Park isn't accustomed to facing.

St. John's led 14-1 at the end of the first quarter, 27-3 at the half and 39-7 after three quarters.

Kate Polischuk led the Eagles with 16 points and Kelly Van Leeuwen scored 12 points.

Chapple and Welsh each scored six points for the Trojans.

St. John's defeated North Park 61-22 in the junior game.

Megan Thompson scored 17 points and Braelyn Verschoore got 10 points for St. John's. Abbey Sales scored nine points and Kirsten Sowa got six for North Park.

Assumption College Lions swept a doubleheader from Paris District High Panthers at Assumption.

Assumption won the junior game 55-8 and the senior 45-14.

Sara Harris scored 13 points and Nicole Shea got 10 for the junior Lions. Emma Woods, Skylar Wright and Emma Hanley played well for the junior Panthers.

Abby Heron scored 14 points for the senior Lions. Kaitlyn Waud got 10 and Ann Hawthorne seven. Sam Ferretti scored four points for the Panthers. Julie Hmiel and Chelsea Loube also played well for Paris.

BCI managed to take a doubleheader from Pauline Johnson Collegiate.

BCI Colts defeated PJC Warriors 28-23 in junior and BCI Mustangs defeated PJC Thunderbirds 54-24 in senior.

Rachel Adkins scored 20 points for the Colts and Cara Humeniuk added four. Shelby Laughlin got nine points and Natasha Irwin netted eight for the Warriors.

Tori Candy scored 17 points for the Mustangs. Megan Melling scored 11 points and Spencer Candy got 10. Chelsea Biggs scored 14 points for the T-Birds and Sam Buck added four points.
