Brantford Collegiate Institute Mustangs scored the first six points of the third quarter Tuesday night against the St. John's College Green Eagles.
Was the biggest upset of the Brant County high school senior girls' basketball season possible?
But it didn't take long for the powerful Eagles to dash any hopes the Mustangs and their supporters had of surprising the defending Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association's Quad-A champions.
The Eagles, led by their Ontario Triplets, went on a 10-1 run to end the quarter and eventually cruise to 54-39 victory at BCI.
The Mustangs, despite the loss, were pleased with their performance.
"We played well," said head coach Ron Jamula.
"That's the best game we've played for a while. Our goal is always to win but, against them, our goal is to break the press and play well defensively.
"To hold them to 30 points with only a few minutes left in the third quarter, that's pretty good defence."
BCI's run to start the third quarter reduced the St. John's lead to 30-23.
Then the Triplets --Kelly Van Leeuwen, Kayla Santilli and Kate Polischuk, who were members of the Ontario under-17 team last summer --went to work.
Polischuk hit a three-pointer, Van Leeuwen scored off a steal and Santilli hit a 10-footer before Polischuk completed the spurt with another three-pointer.
Van Leeuwen and Polischuk each finished with 15 points. Santilli netted 11.
Spencer Candy scored 14 points for the Mustangs. Tori Candy got nine points and Claudia DiFrancesco netted eight points.
"Kelly (Van Leeuwen) turns it up a notch and they have another level to go to," Jamula said of the Eagles.
He also noted that since the Eagles are Quad-A, they won't be the concern of the Mustangs once the Brant County season concludes since BCI is a AAA school.
"North Park has to be our focus (for the Central Western Ontario Secondary School Association AAA championships) just as we have to be their focus," Jamula said.
"They (North Park) handled us pretty easy on the weekend."
The coach was referring to the championship game of a tournament in London in which North Park defeated BCI.
"This was a big game for us to re-establish playing well," Jamula said.
St. John's defeated the BCI Colts 38-23 in the junior game.
Rebecca Dabor, Megan Piette, Sadie Rowe and Megan Thompson each scored six points for the junior Eagles.
Lexis Lancaster, Rachel Adkins and Jenna Schonbacher starred for the Colts.
Assumption College Lions swept a doubleheader at Pauline Johnson Collegiate.
The Lions defeated the junior Warriors 52-10 and the senior Thunderbirds 50-27.
Sara Harris scored 19 points and Alex Vandyk got 10 for the junior Lions.
Madeline Dailey, Amber Kozinski and Natasha Irwin played well for the Warriors.
Meaghan Hanley scored 14 points to lead the senior Lions. Abby Heron netted nine points and Emily Gill got eight.
Brittany Hughes and Sam Buck each scored six points for the T-Birds. Krista Riimand and Zoe Wickson got five points each.
North Park Collegiate Trojans swept a doubleheader from Paris District High School Panthers at NPC.
North Park won the junior game 38-11 and the senior 38-5.
Abbey Johnston scored 10 points and Abbey Sales got eight for the junior Trojans. Alex Forsyth got six points for the junior Panthers.
Reo Roland scored 11 points and Allyson DeLorenzi got 10 points for the senior Trojans. Hayley Parker got three points and Deven Knill scored two for the senior Panthers.
