The 16 teams that will be participating in this year's Heinbuch Classic Tournament in Kitchener have been announced.
This tournament is annually one of the top-notch early season tournaments in Ontario. In fact, last year's three OFSAA "AAAA" medalists --- Oakwood CI from Toronto, St. Thomas More from Hamilton, and Scarborough's Mother Teresa all participated last year, with Oakwood taking that title as well.
The 2010 edition of the tournament sees those above three teams all returning.
Although no CWOSSA team has won the tournament since Brantford Assumption in 1999, we have seen some notable performances from our region.
To recap the format, the tournament is a regular bracketed draw, with your first two games determining the "division" that you will play in. (Win-Win = Gold; Win-Loss = Silver; Loss-Win = Bronze; Loss-Loss = Consolation).
Here's a look back on some of the best all-time CWOSSA Performances:
Gold Division
Brantford Assumption (1999): Tournament Champions
Guelph St. James (1998): Tournament Champions
Kitchener CI (2004): Tournament Finalists
Brantford St. John's (1992): Tournament Finalists
Silver Division
Preston HS (2002): Silver Division Champions
Guelph Centennial (2000): Silver Division Champions
Brantford North Park (1999): Silver Division Champions
Brantford St. John's (1998): Silver Division Champions
Guelph JF Ross (1995): Silver Division Champions
Brantford North Park (1992): Silver Division Champions
And, for the record books, the last "CWOSSA" champion in each division:
Gold (1999): Brantford Assumption
Silver (2002): Cambridge Preston HS
Bronze (2007): Waterloo SJAM
Consolation (2008): Waterloo SJAM
CWOSSA will be represented by 6 schools that will try to "turn the tide" and pick up the first silver or gold championship for the area since 2002. Leading the way on that list are last year's AAAA champions and runners-up (Waterloo Bluevale and Guelph JF Ross), the CWOSSA AAA champion (Brantford North Park), the D8 champion (Kitchener Resurrection) and the D8 & WCSSAA runners-up (Kitchener St. Mary's and Waterloo SJAM).
Bluevale's bench boss, Doros Theodosiou, is looking for his squad to improve upon last year's performance, where the Knights fell in the silver division semifinals to Pickering HS.
"To me, the Heinbuch is the top tournament in the province - from the level of play to the organization of the tournament," said Theodosiou, "the expectation for us is to definitely be in the gold division after Friday's second game."
