Getting off to a quick start seemed to be the recipe for success in the WCSSAA semifinals on Saturday night at CHCI.
Like the WCI Vikings did in the first semifinal, the KCI Raiders gunned their way to a double-digit lead after one quarter of play (20-5) and kept the pedal down after that, putting up 40 points in the first-half en route to a 71-49 victory over the homecourt Cameron Heights Gaels.
The Raiders maintained quarter leads of 15, 16 and 24 points before both teams substituted liberally in the final 8 minutes.
Both KCI and CHCI had solid fan bases out in attendance on Saturday; an interesting exchange happened late in the 4th quarter when the KCI crowd started the "na-na-na-na-hey-hey-hey-goodbye" chant. They were promptly yelled at by KCI's Coach White who ordered them to shut it down out of respect for their opponents.
The big difference that allowed the Raiders to run away with this one? KCI got to the rim with ease in this one (shooting 27/59 for the game), while their defense held the Gaels away from the paint, often forcing them into contested outside jumpers.
Kate MacTavish had an outstanding game for the Raiders; she made 12 of 15 attempts from the floor (9-10 from two-point range and 3-5 from three-point land) en route to a game high 31 points. For good measure, she also managed a double-double by hauling in 11 rebounds.
Olivia Nelles added 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists for KCI, while Barbara Robertson had 12 points and 6 'boards.
A taped-up Erin Robbins started for Cameron, but was held relatively in check (9 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists). She didn't appear to be 100%, however, it was clear that she wasn't going to be kept off the court for this one.
Siki Jez led the way for CHCI, netting 17 points including 3 three-pointers; she also hauled in 10 rebounds. Liz McLellan added 7 for the Gaels.
Despite the loss, the Gaels still secured a CWOSSA "AAAA" berth by virtue of Eastwood's loss to WCI. The Gaels will enter this weekend's tournament in a very tough pool that features last year's OFSAA champions, the Brantford St. John's Eagles, as well as the D10 champs from Centre Wellington DHS.
