WCSSAA: Vikings Shut Down Hudyn, Rebels to Advance To Final

In the first of two WCSSAA senior girls' semifinals on Saturday evening at Cameron Heights, the WCI Vikings flexed their muscle early and often, beating the Eastwood Rebels 54-34 and securing their ticket to the CWOSSA "AAAA" championships in Brantford this weekend.

The Vikes jumped out to a 16-3 lead after the end of the first quarter, thanks in part to some buzzing pressure defense that resulted in numerous ECI turnovers.

The Rebels were able to gather themselves in the second frame, outscoring WCI 14-12 and heading into the locker room trailing by a 28-17 score.  WCI's Lindsay Taylor poured in 14 first half points to pace the Vikes.

WCI continued their defensive pressure after halftime, opening up a 20-point lead after three quarters.  They then slowed things to a crawl in the fourth quarter, minimizing possessions and heading home with the victory.

Taylor led WCI with 19 points, while Lindsay Lessard added 9 points and 6 rebounds.  Alyssa Shortt stuffed the stat sheet to the tune of 7 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists.

Michelle Hudyn was solid in defeat for Eastwood, recording a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.  The Vikes, however, had her constantly shadowed and she had to work for everything that she got on this night.  Caitlyn Schlegel added 6 points before leaving in the second half with an apparent ankle injury.

WCI will play KCI in a rematch of last year's exciting WCSSAA final at Preston on Wednesday evening (8:00pm).

Mark, do the finals start at 8:00 pm, or at 8:30 pm? There seems to be differing information about that

  2. The WCSSAA website has the junior final at 6:30pm, followed by the senior final at 8:00pm.

I believe the boys' finals usually go at 7 and 8:30, so perhaps that might be a cause for the confusion.

At any rate, with the award presentations and such following the junior game, I will bet the farm on the fact that the game won't start at 8pm. Look for an 8:15-8:30 tip time ;)

If senior game starts at 8:00, it would be a good idea to include that info in a new posting.
