Owen Sound Sun Times: Falcons Win Tough Title Match

Article By: Bill Walker

KINCARDINE -- The OSCVI Falcons will owe their crosstown rivals a debt of gratitude if they have success at CWOSSA and OFSAA this fall.

The Bluewater Athletic Association senior girls basketball rivals play tough, tight games that could give the Falcons an edge going into CWOSSA next week.

"It was everything we needed to prepare for CWOSSA," OSCVI coach Lee Jacques said Thursday after his squad outlasted a tough West Hill squad 34-24 in the championship final.

"It was the perfect type of game -- lots of intensity and lots of energy. It was a really hardworking game from both sides."

West Hill was up 18-15 at the half when OSCVI shut them down in the third quarter and took a 24-18 lead.

"We came out and our energy level was so good," said Jacques. "Every shot they (West Hill) took was a tough one and that's all you can ask from your defence."

This game was still in question late in the fourth quarter with the Falcons clinging to a four-point lead with two minutes remaining.

"We stayed aggressive which is a big deal," said Jacques. "Sometimes when you have a lead you go into a shell. They kept pushing the ball down the floor trying to get layups and they kept the tempo up. They certainly didn't play not to lose. They played to win."

West Hill clearly ran out of steam in the third quarter after a tough semifinal match with Kincardine.

"That was a deciding factor for us going down the stretch because we had to play so hard against Kincardine," said West Hill coach Ken Lougheed.

"We came down and had to foul and it ended up a 10-point game. Really it was a closer game than that."

Erika French paced OSCVI with 11 points while Audrey Liskauskas added eight.

Maddie Lougheed had 18 points for the Raiders.

OSCVI advanced to the final with a 49-11 win over the Walkerton District Raiders in the semis.

Lori Pridham, Sarah Mitchell and Georgia Ottewell each had six points, while Jocelyn Anderson and Erika French combined for 16 points.

West Hill moved on to the final after a close 43-33 win over host Kincardine District.

The Falcons advance to the CWOSSA AA championships on Wednesday at Guelph's Our Lady of Lourdes.

Kincardine District will also advance to the CWOSSA AA tournament.

West Hill will play host to a yet-to-be-determined Brantford school in a CWOSSA challenge game on Tuesday.

The senior and junior doubleheader will get underway at 2 p.m.

(Mark's Note:  West Hill will play Brantford Collegiate in both contests)
Walkerton's Sacred Heart Crusaders will advance to the CWOSSA AA junior championships on Wednesday in Guelph.

Victoria Carroll and Amber Smolenaar each scored eight points as the Crusaders beat Hanover's John Diefenbaker Trojans 30-12 in the final.

Ashton Nixon and Natalie Koehler each had four points for the Trojans.

The AA challenge game is Monday in Hanover at 4 p.m.

JDSS advanced to the final with a 49-37 win over the St. Mary's Mustangs, while Sacred Heart downed OSCVI 32- 20 in the other semi.

OSCVI is challenging John Diefenbaker for the second berth to CWOSSA AA in Guelph.
