WCSSAA: Shorthanded Vikes Do It With Defense

To say that the KCI Raiders struggled in the first half of Wednesday night's WCSSAA final would be a bit of an understatement.

The Raiders did not hit a field goal in the first quarter, and made only one in the second ---- going 1-for-23 (4.3%) from the floor in the first half.

As with any basketball game, there were a couple of bad shots, but you still have to credit the WCI defense for that stat.

The Vikes were buzzing on the defensive end all night, forcing KCI into (mostly) contested shots throughout the game.  Furthermore, their full-court pressure resulted in a few Raider turnovers in the early going; a couple baskets off those turnovers enabled WCI to take a 22-7 lead heading into halftime.

Yet, despite scoring just 7 first half-points, the Raiders found themselves in a ball-game in the second half of this one.  After WCI ran 1:00 of the clock and scored on their opening second-half possession, they would then go without a point for around the next 5:00 of game time.  During that stretch, the Raiders scored 7 of their own points to trim the deficit to 10.

The Raider comeback charge was led by their offensive leader, Kate MacTavish, and one of her baskets actually brought KCI to within 8 at one point.  However, every time it looked as though KCI was going to cut into the deficit further, WCI would come back with a big basket of their own to maintain a 10-12 point cushion for most of the second half.

WCI's star guard Alyssa Shortt led the way on this night with 18 points; she also hauled in 10 rebounds.  Lindsay Taylor had 8 points, including a couple of big second-half three-pointers, while WCI's scoring was rounded out by Erin Helsby (6), Bria Dietrich (4), Lynn Dabrowski (3), Alex Klein (3), and Julia Pavlik (2).

Lindsay Lessard, who had a minor heart procedure earlier in the day, did not play for WCI.

MacTavish accounted for over half of KCI's points, with a 17-point effort.  Other Raiders hitting the scoresheet included Olivia Nelles (5), Barbara Robertson (4), Susan Gorgon (3), Jessica Duke (2), and Skye Johns (2).
