Around The Horn: Tuesday News & Notes

Highlanders Top Knights in Exhibition

Yes, it's just an exhibition game and teams are still sorting out their rosters and trying to deal with only having had a handful (if that) of practices.

That said, SJAM's 70-48 victory over Waterloo rival Bluevale might give them some confidence heading into next week's Heinbuch Classic tournament and the WCSSAA regular season.

With both sides substituting liberally in the 4th quarter, the Highlanders turned a 10-point lead at the end of the third quarter into a 22-point margin by outscoring BCI 15-3 in the final frame.

"Perhaps we should have had more than one practice - we were awful," Knights coach Doros Theodosiou said bluntly.

SJAM's Ben Reyhani led all scorers with 23 points, while Stefan Cvrkalj carved out his first 20+ effort of the campaign (22 points).

The Knights are back in action on Friday against Waterloo St. David's in another exhibition contest.  They have their third preseason game on Monday against another D8 school, Kitchener St. Mary's.

Westside, St. James Split "AAA" Qualifiers

In a "AAA" qualifier doubleheader, the St. James Lions faced off against the Westside Thunder in both junior and senior games, with each school registering one victory.

The senior showdown saw Westside take a 49-30 decision over St. James, backed by 17 points from Brooke Rowland and 15 from Sami Mikulik.  Erica Zen had 13 for the Lions.

To nobody's surprise, the junior St. James junior Lions came out gunning after being beaten in the D10 final on the weekend.  They opened up a 27-4 lead on Westside after one quarter, and cruised to a 65-24 win.  Bench scoring accounted for 36 of the Lion points, while the individual leaders included Brittany Gazzola (14), Sierra Rutherford (11), and Ashley Benham (9).

Toni Juric had 14 for the Thunder.

Both winners advance to this weekend's AAA CWOSSA championship tournament in Cambridge.
