Don't have a lot of time today - but I can tell you that the Resurrection Phoenix Senior Girls basketball team was the only "lower seed" to advance yesterday in the D8 playoffs (SBCSS juniors, RCSS juniors and the SMHS seniors were all victorious).
However, the Phoenix may have an extra reason to be grateful for this Remembrance Day.
Due to the St. David gym being used last night to set up for their Remembrance Day assembly today, the gym was unavailable at the 3:30pm start time.
As such, the game was moved to a neutral venue. The game at RIM Park proved to be every bit as exciting for those that were "in the know" of the gym change. Resurrection's Megan Robinson hit a three-point buzzer beater for the Phoenix to send the game into OT, where Resurrection eventually prevailed by 5 points (52-47).
Did the venue change alter the outcome? It's hard to say. From a St. David standpoint, at least it did not have any implication on their "AAA" CWOSSA berth, which they officially secured when St. Mary's beat MDCSS in the other semifinal.
I'm told that St. David asked if Resurrection would play a 1:30pm game at SDCSS (in front of a home crowd) but that time was turned down by the Resurrection coaching staff due to an "unfair advantage". RCSS countered with a 5pm offer to host the game at Rez which was also turned down by St. David, leading to the neutral site game.
