Brantford Expositor: Junior Eagles Defense Stymies Lions
Article By: Ed O'Leary
St. John's College Green Eagles built a comfortable 30-5 lead in the first half against the Assumption College Lions on Tuesday night.
The Eagles went on to score a relatively easy 43-19 win in the first game of the Brant County high school junior girls best-of-three championship played at Assumption.
St. John's, undefeated in Brant County this season, doesn't expect to enjoy such an easy victory when the teams meet in Game 2 on Thursday at 5: 30 p.m. at Assumption.
If necessary, Game 3 will be at Assumption on Monday night.
The Eagles used a triangle-and-two defence against the Lions. St. John's, is this case, designed that defence to deny the ball to Lions' stars Sara Harris and Alex Vandyk when Assumption set up in its offence.
"We face-guarded them and put the other three (defenders) in a zone," Innes explained.
"We took the ball away from their best players. We just played tough defence, denying, not letting the ball in (close to the basket). I think we've improved a huge amount. We're doing so much better (than earlier in the season)."
The Eagles spread the scoring throughout their lineup.
Braelyn Verschoore led St. John's with 10 points. Rebecca Dabor got nine. Megan Piette got six and Bridget Monkman and Megan Thompson each scored four. Jessika Dignan netted three.
Harris scored seven points for the Lions. Nicole Shea, Naomi Samuel, Hayley Rathwell, Alexa Aquino, Caitlin Wallace and Vandyk each got two.
The Eagles expect the Lions to adjust for Game 2.
"They'll come out playing hard," Innes said. "They'll be ready for the triangle-and-two (defence) so we'll have to change up our game plan."
