Despite missing 3 of their forwards due to commitments with the St. Mary's Volleyball squad, the Eagles' senior boys team went 2-1 on the weekend in Hamilton at the annual Pinky Lewis tournament.
The Eagles dropped their opener to last year's Hamilton Catholic champs, ACMT, by a 71-63 score. The Eagles led by 4 after three quarters but could not hold on down the stretch (and had to foul which extended the margin at the end). Ben Bankazo had 26 to lead SMHS in that one.
St. Mary's rebounded to knock off Hamilton Westmount 88-59 in their second outing, backed by 31 points from guard Alex Thompson.
The Eagles failed to advance as the wildcard to the quarterfinal round (Burlington Notre Dame was a +30; St. Mary's +21), so played against the second place team from another pool on Saturday --- Stoney Creek's Orchard Park. In that one, the Eagles cruised to a 59-37 win, with Thompson leading the way with 16 points.
The final featured two of Ontario's highly regarded squads (and Heinbuch participants) doing battle ---- J. Clarke Richardson of Ajax defeated Oakville Loyola 70-61. JCR defeated Hamilton Brebeuf in one semifinal 86-49, while Loyola doused Pickering's Pine Ridge 63-40 in the other.
Aaron Redpath of JCR was named tournament MVP.
