Junior Saints, Senior Eagles Take D8 Championships

In two very exciting games over at St. Mary's in Kitchener, the St. Benedict juniors and St. Mary's seniors captured their respective D8 championships in tonight's action.

Junior D8 Final

The Saints defeated Resurrection 38-35 in the junior contest in a game that was tight throughout.  No team held a "end of quarter lead" that was greater than 2 points.  Hilary Ferguson had 14 points, 13 rebounds and 2 assists for St. Benedict, while Brooke Wanklin had 11 points and 7 rebounds.  Janelle Case was a strong interior presence for SBCSS as well, with 8 points and 10 'boards.

Rez received a strong showing from Sarah Schultz, who scored a game high 17 points while hauling down 4 rebounds.  Marley Neiscier added 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists for the Phoenix.

The Saints advance to the CWOSSA "AAAA" championships next week.

Senior D8 Final

The St. Mary's Eagles trailed after the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarters.  Thankfully for them, they were ahead by the end of the 4th.

The Eagles rallied from an early double-digit deficit to top Rez 52-46.  A Megan Robinson three-pointer to close the third quarter put RCSS up 36-29 heading into the fourth quarter but the Eagles came out firing on all cylinders, going on a quick 6-0 run in the first minute (all by Laura Boterman) to get right back in the game.

The Eagles went ahead for good (43-40) on an Emily Webber three-pointer with 3:30 to go.  The Phoenix kept things interesting for most of the final minutes; however, the Eagles converted their free throws towards the end to win by 6.

Kaitlyn Schenck had a tough day for St. Mary's --- though she did finish with 22 points.  She shot 8-for-30 from the floor but came through with some big second half baskets to keep the momentum rolling in SMHS' favour.

Boterman had 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Webber added 6 on a pair of three-balls.

Rez received 20 points from Robinson, who was held relatively in check in the second half after going off for 15 in the first 16 minutes.  Janelle Santi had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Jacqui Rodrigues added 8.

The Eagles will advance as the D8's representative at next weekend's CWOSSA "AAAA" championship.

Note:  We'll have full game recaps and boxscores tomorrow; however, just getting this info up for now.
