Brantford Expositor: Paris Gets Strong Effort From Shuffled Roster

Article By:  Ed O'Leary

Paris District High School Panthers appeared to be up against the wall as they took the floor without their two best players, Josh Fabe and Jacob Kelley, on Thursday night.

"All you can ask of the players there is to give everything they've got and they did and more," head coach Mike Wittchen said after the Panthers defeated the Assumption College Lions, who were also shorthanded, 61-49 in a Brant County high school senior boys basketball game in Paris.

Fabe and Kelley watched from the sidelines as they served one-game suspensions for technical fouls they received in a loss against the St. John's College Green Eagles on Tuesday night.

"We had guys that they weren't used to," said Wittchen. "Travis Taylor is usually a forward and he was asked to be a guard. Adam Sharp is usually a shooting guard and he played point guard. He was also asked to guard their (Lions) best player (point guard Andre Toic).

"Also, we had guys getting more touches than they were used to and they performed better than I could have asked."

Assumption led 13-12 at the end of the first quarter but the score was tied 24-24 at the half.

The Panthers took a 42-32 lead by the end of the third quarter.

The Lions cut the Panthers' lead to six points in the fourth quarter but Assumption then ran into foul trouble and Paris District put the game out of reach.

Sharp scored 18 points for the Panthers. Taylor got 14, Taylor Shipp knocked down 10 and Quinn Attlebery scored nine.

Toic scored 20 points for the Lions. He hit four three-pointers, including three in the fourth quarter.

Paul Sabolsky and Pat Wilson each scored eight points.

Assumption defeated Paris District 61-57 in the junior game.

Nolan Drong scored 22 points and Zoltan Barna got 16 for the Lions.

Harji Gill scored 23 points and Kevin Hmiel got 13 for the Panthers.
