The Resurrection Phoenix had some success at this past weekend's Chancellor Tournament in Hamilton, despite playing without 2009-10 D8 MVP Andrew Mwangi for about 75% of the tournament.
Mwangi injured an ankle in the first round against Oakville Holy Trinity, where the Phoenix prevailed 61-58. The Phoenix were up by 18 in that one but held off a furious Titan rally to advance to the championship side of the bracket. Before leaving with his injury, Mwangi netted 12 points for Rez. Tyler Schneider and Cory Kenning also had 12 in the win.
In the second round, the Phoenix held off one of the host schools, Bishop Tonnos CSS, 69-63 in double overtime. Tyler Schneider (17) and Cory Kenning (15) had the top performances for Rez in that one.
This advanced RCSS to the tournament semifinal, but they came up short against London's HB Beal (47-35). Jamie Keil had 8 points for the Phoenix in the loss, while after the game, Schneider was named as a first-team all-star.
Beal took out Burlington Notre Dame in the championship final 44-38. Notre Dame had advanced to the final by defeating St. Thomas More 54-52.
Overall, it was a very exciting tournament with 4 games going to overtime (including the aforementioned double OT Rez win) and six games decided by 5 points or less.
As for Mwangi, he'll probably be out of action until after the Christmas break.
