The St. Mary's Eagles took the title at the fourth annual "Knights-Vikes" Senior Boys Classic, defeated fellow Kitchener school Forest Heights CI in the tournament championship, 71-59.
This was an intriguing championship matchup, with the size and experience of Forest Heights going up against the speed and athleticism of St. Mary's. In the end, it would be the Eagles that prevailed thanks in part to a 31-point outburst from SG Alex Thompson. Adam Voll chipped in 12 for SMHS, while Javon Masters (20) and Kieran McAndrew (9) led the Trojans.
Forest Heights and St. Mary's are actually the only 2 local schools to win the tournament in its 4 years of existence. The past champions list now reads as follows:
2010 - Kitchener St. Mary's
2009 - Brampton Notre Dame
2008 - Brampton Notre Dame
2007 - Kitchener Forest Heights
The team that Forest Heights defeated in the first round, Guelph JF Ross, took the consolation title with a 77-65 win over Grand River. Evan Karl (20) and Shamlo Saeed (18) led the way for the Royals, while GRCI received 23 from Daniel Harun and 15 from Brodi Verbiski.
In the consolation semifinals, Saeed poured in 34 points against WCI to help the Royals take down the Vikings 73-64. Grand River had no trouble with TASS from Peterborough, coasting to a 77-46 win backed by 23 points from Osama Qahwash.
