The St. Mary's Eagles captured the SJAM "Highlander Hoopla" tournament this past weekend in Waterloo, solidifying themselves as an early season favourite in not only the D8, but also CWOSSA (AAAA).
The Eagles reeled off four consecutive wins during the tournament --- over Grand River, SJAM, Forest Heights and in the final against JF Ross.
In fact, the only one of those four games that was relatively close (a single digit victory) was St. Mary's semifinal victory over Kitchener Forest Heights. In that game, the Eagles jumped out to an 11-3 early lead only to see the Trojans casually work their way back into the game and even take a brief second half lead.
Tyler Hergott drilled a key three-pointer with around 2:00 to go that broke a 57-57 tie and, with the score 62-60 and under :10 to play, grade 9 forward Mike Blumel went 2-for-2 from the line to ice the victory (64-60). Chris Clouthier had 26 and Blumel 21 for the Eagles.
Miller was solid all weekend for the Trojans. He had 33 against St. Mary's, to follow up his earlier 30+ performances --- 36 against Brantford North Park and 31 against Guelph Centennial.
The Eagles defeated Guelph JF Ross 64-44 in the championship game. Hergott had 19 for SMHS, while Kristian Vande Kemp had 20 for JFR.
Earlier on in the tourney, SMHS beat SJAM 53-31 in a quarterfinal game after topping Grand River 70-40 in the opening round.
