It's a team full of new faces and second-year guys stepping into new roles, but if this Simcoe Sabres junior boys basketball team keeps shooting like they did last night, another county title is well within the realm of possibility.
Simcoe opened its season with a road win against the even younger Holy Trinity Titans, beating the Titans 39-30. Led by the power game of Wesley Monkman and the outside shooting of Jordan Peever, Simcoe never trailed the opposition.
Peever was shooting the lights out, scoring the opening bucket just seconds in and never slowing down. Needless to say, the rookie kind of enjoyed his first taste of Norfolk high school basketball.
"It was pretty awesome," he said. "We were making our shots for the most part, and we have a whole team of great shooters."
Simcoe jumped out to a 10-0 lead midway through the first quarter, only to have Holy Trinity fight back and score 10 unanswered points of their own. Just before half, Simcoe went on another scoring run to lead 19-10 at the break.
The streaky play to the second half. The Sabres dominated the early part of the third quarter, extending the lead to 29-14. But again the Titans responded, reeling off 12 straight points to pull within three with six minutes still left in the game.
"I mean, it's basketball, you're going to have stretches like that. The key is you can't let bad runs get you down, you have to bounce back."
That they did. With the score 31-28, Simcoe notched the next eight points to put the game on ice and grab the first W of the campaign. Although official scoring was not kept, Monkman, Peever and Mitchell McDonald counted fort the vast majority of Simcoe points.
While the Sabres are relatively young, the Titans are extremely green by comparison. Stefan Peters and Ryan Cattrysse are the only second year players on the squad, which has already played in two tournaments outside the county. Peters is the engine behind the black and white, which features lots of raw gifted athletes.
"We played alright tonight, especially when compared to how we did in those tournaments," Peters said. "Our problem last year was getting off to slow starts before waking up, and we did the same thing tonight. If we can find a way to get that fixed, I think we can be pretty competitive."
This year's NSSAA junior division is certainly up for grabs, with several schools holding a legitimate shot at the championship banner. Peever is excited about the promise the next couple months hold.
"Once we start talking more and getting our passes on, I think we'll be a pretty tough team to beat."
In the senior game, Simcoe defeated Holy Trinity 45-35. Connor Pettersen scored 14, David Teichrob added 13 and Kevin Allemang scored eight for SCS, while the Titans were led by Andrew Mattan with 13 and Josh Johnson with 10.
The Valley Heights Bears beat Waterford in senior boys basketball 45-41 in overtime. In the junior game it was Waterford coming out on top, downing the Bears 55-41. Results of the Delhi-Port Dover games were not known at press time.

The Holy Trinity and Simcoe Senior game was the worst officiating that i have seen in my life. Feel bad for Holy Trinity.
