Brantford Expositor: Trojans Get Jump on St. John's

Article By:  Ed O'Leary

North Park Collegiate Trojans displayed the value of playing high-calibre early season games Thursday night.

The Trojans jumped on the St. John's College Green Eagles to build a 36-16 lead in the first half which allowed them to cruise to a 52-37 victory at North Park as the Brant County high school senior boys basketball league kicked off its regular-season schedule.

The Trojans, who have already participated in two tournaments, were playing their seventh game.

The Green Eagles were playing their first game of the year.

The Trojans won three games in capturing annual The Expositor tournament before heading to Kitchener last weekend to compete in the Court Heinbuch where they lost three games playing against some of the best teams in Ontario.

"We were lucky to get in the Court Heinbuch," Trojans head coach Todd Andrew said after the win over the Green Eagles. "Good competition early in the year prepares us for the start of our own season."

Andrew asked if the Eagles had just played their first game of the year and he was informed that it was their initial start.

"St. John's is a young group," Andrew said. "They're only going to get better. They're not going to stop working."

Tyler Johnston scored 13 points for the Trojans. Marcus Hamilton got 11, Caler McDonald 10 and Marcus Jones played well directing the offence from his point guard position.

Tyler Van Leeuwen scored 13 points for the Green Eagles and Taylor Pappin got 11.

"I knew what to expect from our boys," said Andrew. "They set the tone early. They came out and did a good job. They established a comfortable lead and worked hard enough to maintain it but there's still lots of work to be done."

St. John's won the junior game 59-50.

Tim Dawson led the junior Eagles with 26 points. Jon Dulmage scored 14 for the junior Trojans. Vishal Brar got 12 and Crisna Som 11.

Paris District High School Panthers and Brantford Collegiate Institute split a doubleheader in Paris.

The senior Panthers defeated the BCI Mustangs 53-47 and the BCI Colts defeated the junior Panthers 56-28.

Josh Fabe scored 17 points to lead the senior Panthers' attack. Jake Keley got 13 points and Adam Sharp 12. Le-Hi Milbin scored 14 points for the Mustangs. Alex Packer got 11 and Ben Candy nine.

Mackenzie Mark scored 13 points for the Colts. Brock Rogerson got 10 points and Chris Gorski nine. Harji Gill scored 12 points for the junior Panthers. Casey Ransahai scored five points.

Assumption College Lions swept a doubleheader from Pauline Johnson Collegiate.

The Lions defeated the PJC Thunderbirds 57-39 in the senior game and Assumption beat the PJC Warriors 46-26 in junior.

Andre Toic, a grade-9 student, scored 20 points to pace the senior Lions. Dexter Hamilton 10 points and Paul Sabolosky seven. Ty Campbell scored 10 points for the T-Birds. Mike Campbell scored nine points and Tyler Thibert six.

A. Zuwala scored eight points for the junior Lions. N. Drong and A. Tlustos each got seven points. Brandon Patterson scored 11 points for the Warriors and Cole Stevenson added seven points.
