The Lourdes Crusaders hung around early, but the hometown Banting Broncos were too much in the second half of this one as they cruised to a 62-36 victory yesterday evening at the University of Western Ontario's Alumni Hall.
Lourdes' Mike Finoro got off to a quick start shooting the ball, as he almost hit for double digits in the first quarter alone. However, it was Banting's 6'3" veteran (Grade 12R) forward Greg Morrow whose physicality on the boards and soft hands inside helped Banting take a 33-24 halftime edge.
The second half was all Banting as they went on a 14-5 third quarter run to break the game open before outscoring Lourdes 15-7 in the final 8:00 for the final margin.
Finoro finished with a game-high 17 points, while forward Ben King had an efficient effort for Lourdes, scoring 8 points on 4-for-5 shooting (he also added 5 rebounds and 2 assists).
Banting received 15 points off the bench --- on 5 three-pointers --- from guard Will Gonser. Greg Morrow finished with a double-double, 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Speaking of three-point shooting, that was a huge difference in this one as Lourdes shot just 3-for-24 behind the arc while the Broncos shot over 70% (8-for-11) from deep.
Lourdes was without the services of grade 11 guard Chris Watson, and definitely could have used him on the offensive end in this one.
The Broncos will take on Barrie St. Joseph's in a consolation semifinal (12:00 noon - Alumni Hall). Lourdes (0-2 on Wednesday) will battle fellow CWOSSA school Brantford North Park in a consolation friendly game (10:30am - Alumni).
