In the nightcap of day one action at Bluevale in the Knights-Vikes Classic, the St. Mary's Eagles were able to
get the SJAM Highlanders to join them in a "run and gun" game of basketball --- pulling away in the second half to a 63-40 win.
SJAM led by six in the early moments of the game, but the Eagles rebounded to take a 12-11 lead after one. The second quarter saw a bit of a push by St. Mary's (33-25 Eagles at the half). However, that score definitely did not reflect the frenetic pace at which this game was played.
In fact, the Eagles and Highlanders combined to jack up 62 --- yes, 62 field goal attempts in the first half! That works out to nearly 4 a minute, and doesn't include possessions that ended in turnovers or free throw attempts.
Needless to say, those who argue that high school basketball should have a shot clock shouldn't use this game as an example.
The Eagles pulled away in the second half, outscoring SJAM 30-15 over the final two quarters. The Eagles were solid in transition (thanks to PG Isaac Lance finding players up the floor), and the Eagles were shooting layups while (most of the time) SJAM was shooting contested jumpers.
The game also marked a big "coming out party" for 6-foot-5 grade 11 forward Adam Voll. I'm sure that he'll quickly start to not only see a starting spot for the Eagles, but also catch the eyes of a lot of OUA coaches --- especially if he continues to perform at the level he did on Friday night.
Voll led St. Mary's with 19 points off the bench, on 7-for-8 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the line. He has a great knack for being able to finish in traffic, and combines that with solid athleticism on the defensive end (three solid blocks, including one big one off the backboard in the third quarter that led to an Eagle layup in transition).
Alongside Voll's effort, Ben Bankazo poured in 15 points and hauled in 12 rebounds for SMHS, while Henry Bankazo had 11 points. Isaac Lance netted 7 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds, while usual top scorer Alex Thompson had a relatively quiet night, scoring just 5 points on 2-for-11 shooting.
For SJAM, Edem Ame led the way with 13 points and Ben Reyhani added 9, albeit on just 3-for-18 shooting from the floor. Theshawn Berry had 7 points and 9 rebounds.
